When a guest wants to put a song on, the usual answer is the Wi-Fi password, so their phone can find the speakers. In September 2026 I worked out what that takes with Spotify Connect, and I ended up changing nothing on the network.

## Taking over a speaker has a catch

For a different account to take the speaker over, the phone has to find it on the local network first. As of October 2026, Spotify's support page says all devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi the first time you connect.

Spotify's hardware docs, as of October 2026, add a catch. When a speaker accepts a new login, it logs the previous user out. So a guest who takes over a speaker logs it into their account, and it drops out of yours until someone logs it back in.

![Per Spotify's docs as of October 2026, comparison of two ways a guest can add music. Speaker takeover: the guest's phone must be on the same Wi-Fi, the speaker logs into the guest's account, and the host's account is logged out of it. Spotify Jam: the guest joins by link or QR code from any network, adds songs to the host's queue through Spotify, and the speaker stays on the host's account.](https://willcurran.com/hs-fs/hubfs/will-curran-brand/guests-pick-the-music-two-paths.png?width=1440&height=836&name=guests-pick-the-music-two-paths.png)

## What Jam does instead

The host starts a Jam and shares an invite link or a QR code, and guests add songs to the queue from their own phones. As of October 2026, Spotify's support page says you don't need to be on the same Wi-Fi for Jam to work. The speaker stays logged into the host's account, and no guest phone needs a way onto the home network. The host can remove people, and a setting limits guests to adding songs.

I went with Jam and left the network alone.

## Where it falls short

- **Premium matters more than I first wrote down.** My September notes said free accounts could add songs. Spotify's page is more specific: the host needs Premium, free users can join in person, and joining remotely needs Premium.
- **The host is the Jam.** If the host leaves, the Jam ends for everyone.
- **It leans on Spotify's cloud.** I prefer local control over a vendor's cloud. My speakers were already streaming from Spotify and signed into my account, so Jam added no new cloud dependency. It moved the trust decision from the network to an account setting.

## If you are about to try this

- **Try Jam before you touch the network.** It may be all you need.
- **Keep your Wi-Fi password to yourself.** A song request is a poor reason to share it.
- **If a guest really must drive a speaker**, expect that speaker to leave your account, and plan to log it back in afterwards.

## Build it yourself

What you need, per Spotify's support pages as of October 2026: a Spotify Premium account on the host phone, a speaker that supports Spotify Connect, and guests with the Spotify app. Start a Jam from the device picker, tap Invite, and share the link or QR code. If you only want guests adding songs, turn off their ability to change what's playing. No new hardware and no network changes.

Give this to your AIHelp me let guests add songs to my home speakers without sharing my Wi-Fi password or changing my network. My speakers are \[brand/model\] and I use \[streaming service and plan\]. First, check the service's current support pages for a group-queue feature like Spotify Jam: how guests join, whether they need to be on my network, and which plan each side needs, in person and remotely. List the host controls and what happens when the host leaves. Then explain what would happen if a guest connected to a speaker directly from their own account instead: does the speaker log out my account, and how do I get it back? Give me a quick test I can run with a second phone before anyone arrives.

If you have a better way to hand over the aux, I would like to hear it.
